| Rodents can enter your work area, office or home through a
hole the size of a shirt button. They are attracted to food not kept in
closed containers. Make your buildings less attractive to rodents by denying
access to food, water and shelter. When cleaning areas where rodents have
been, always wet any droppings, and nearby surfaces with a
disinfectant solution (such as Steri-Fab), wear rubber gloves and
respiratory protection, set traps, clean with disinfectant, and minimize
handling dead rodents or their droppings. Because rodents may have fleas
that carry plague, another deadly disease, you may need to treat for fleas,
especially if rodents have recently been found dead in the area.
Prevent Rodent Entry: Secure your buildings. Use STUF-FIT to seal, screen, or cover all holes into your buildings. To help keep rodents from digging, place 3 inches of gravel around the base of homes and trailers. Use Pest "Universal" Guard vent covers, they are designed to fit over clothes dryer or bathroom exhaust vents to prevent entry of rodents, chipmunks, snakes and birds. Cleaning Infested Areas: Open doors and windows before cleaning. If possible, use an electric fan for 30 minutes and leave the area to avoid breathing in dust which may carry virus. Always spray disinfectant such as Steri-Fab on dead rodents, traps, nests, droppings or areas where rodents have been. Dispose of trapped rodents safely. Use rubber gloves, or plastic bags to carefully remove captured rodents. You can turn a plastic bag inside-out, then place it on your hand like a mitten; pick up dead rodent; then without directly contacting the carcass, turn bag back right-side-out over the rodent; seal the bad and dispose of the bagged rodent. Outside Control: Use a repellent such as Dr. T's ( Rat & Mouse Repellent), around the exterior of the buildings this eliminates the handling of dead rodents. Do not leave pet food or water out overnight. Remove from the premises junk cars, trash, and old tires. When building new barns or sheds, build with raised cement foundations. When cleaning areas where rodents have been, follow disinfection and disposal procedures. Encourage natural rodent predators such as hawks, foxes and snakes. Cut grass and trim bushes with-in 100ft. of building. Move woodpiles, gardens, trash cans with tight-fitting lids, and animal feed in rodent-proof containers away from the house (at least 100ft). Raise woodpiles and trash cans at least 12 inches off the ground. If rodent numbers or other circumstances warrant, you may wish to contract with a professional pest control company. |
