"I am the Mosquito Control Officer for the Town of
Stratford, CT. Our town is located along the Housatonic River and Long
Island Sound so there are many salt marshes within our borders. Our
citizens are very conscious of the environment and so we are dedicated
to using the least toxic methods to control mosquitoes and other
pests.
I am constantly looking for new products and so this
Spring our Town Manager asked us to look at Mosquito Barrier. I read
the label and saw that it was concentrated garlic juice and smiled. I
had some knowledge about garlic and its' repellent properties but had
never seen it commercially prepared and available in the commercial
market. I asked for a gallon to test and sprayed it around town.
I was pleasantly shocked at the results. It is sold
as an effective repellent and we are finding that it effectively
controls mosquitoes when we spray. The town employees at the Water
Control Plant can now work outside in tee shirts. The spectators can
view the Raybesto Brakette's softball team practice without holding
cans of Raid or Off and the kids at Sterling House Daycare Center do
not complain about mosquito bites. I used to receive 5/7 calls per day
from residents complaining about mosquitos' problems; that is down to
none most days perhaps one. I am beginning to feel like the Maytag
repairman in that commercial.
We are most pleased with the product and have
expanded our use into other sections of town. We have mosquito traps
in prime breeding areas around town. Although the actual numbers of
mosquitoes are confidential, I can say that prior to spraying with
Mosquito Barrier, one particular trap would hold hundreds of
mosquitoes when emptied. After spraying the first time, the trap
contained significantly fewer mosquitoes. The next time I sprayed, the
trap contained even fewer mosquitoes. All other conditions remain
generally the same. The only calculable change in our control program
has been the introduction of Mosquito Barrier. We are able to get
these results without the introduction of any chemicals into the
environment of our lovely town and we are most pleased to continue to
control mosquitoes in this manner and to expand the use of Mosquito
Barrier throughout our town.
